Who is Jared Vennett from The Big Short?

Any fans of the 2015 film The Big Short will know the character of Jared Vennett. But, is he based on a real person? Who is it? And what is he up to now?

The Big Short, directed by Adam McKay, has a star-studded line-up including Christian Bale, Steve Carrell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt. It is based on the non-fiction book written in 2010 by Michael Lewis, which describes the real estate market of the 2000s, in particular the financial crisis of 2007-2008.

The film was released by Paramount Pictures in December 2015 to critical success, grossing $133 million and winning the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay Buy Ativan Online.

Is Jared Vennett based on a real person?

In reality, Jared Vennett is based on an actual person, Greg Lippmann. When the financial crisis began, Lippmann worked at Deutsche Bank as global head of asset-backed securities (ABS) and collateralized debt obligations (CDO). According to Bloomberg, he made $1.55 billion by betting against subprime debt to offset losses on mortgage investments.

What is Greg Lippmann’s background?

As a child, Lippmann lived in New York City, before attending the University of Pennsylvania to study economics and English.

His first position at Credit Suisse was as head of ABS and CDO trading, before he moved to Deutsche Bank. During his time there, he traded ABS (asset-based) and RMBS (residential mortgage-backed securities) that weren’t investment grade. Since 2003, he has been responsible for the global trading of ABS and CDOs.

What has Greg Lippmann done since The Big Short?

He joined Fred Brettschneider’s hedge fund in April 2010 after leaving Deutsch Bank. In 2005, Brettschneider was named Global Markets Head at Deutsche Bank, and together with him, they started LibreMax Partners, which managed $900 million at the time of this writing (as of 2022). As a portfolio manager and chief investment officer, Greg Lippmann oversees investments.

His involvement with the South Fork Natural History Museum and American Museum of Natural History includes service on the advisory council.

How did Greg Lippmann feel about being played by Ryan Gosling in The Big Short?

The outcome turned out to be quite positive for him. According to him:

The chances of Ryan Gosling playing you in a movie are much lower than those of other actors. A movie that stars one of the most sexiest men alive is hard to complain about.”
